Overview: Facility Coding Manager, On-site/hybrid

General Summary: 

Conducts systematic reviews of medical coding across various patient categories to ensure the timely and accurate submission of codes for all diagnoses and procedures, with a particular emphasis on those impacting reimbursement through Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs). Proactively engages in ongoing research to address, clarify, and resolve coding issues as a routine part of the process.

Job Requirements:

  • 5 years experience in an acute care hospital setting, Preferred: 5 years supervisory  experience in an acute care hospital setting or 10 years coding experience

  • CCS

 
  • Bachelors Degree

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 
  1. Oversees the comprehensive coding process for both inpatient and outpatient services.
  2. Manages the assignment of Evaluation and Management (E/M) level codes for Emergency Department cases.
  3. Conducts random reviews of accounts to ensure precise assignment of the most suitable MS-DRG for inpatients, Ambulatory Payment Groups (APGs) for Day Surgery, and appropriate diagnosis/procedure codes for outpatients, including the optimal E/M level.
  4. Monitors essential queues daily to ensure timely coding of medical records.
  5. Demonstrates expertise in addressing DRG payer issues, identifying documentation opportunities, understanding clinical documentation requirements, and adhering to coding standards.
  6. Conducts audits of coding staff to assess documentation accuracy, including principal and secondary diagnosis assignment, procedures for DRG accuracy, and the quality of physician queries for coding clarification.
  7. Analyzes statistical and narrative reports on department services to ensure accurate and timely coding.
  8. Supervises coding staff within the Health Information Management department.
  9. Maintains precise budget data and monitors coding staff productivity.
  10. Develops and delivers educational programs for physicians and other stakeholders to enhance coding outcomes.
  11. Acts as a liaison with EPIC, evaluating software updates and participating in software change testing.
  12. Performs any other duties assigned within the scope and responsibilities of the job
